Daihatsu: compact Kei cars for the whole world

The Japanese car manufacturer was founded in 1907, but did not receive its current name until almost 50 years later. During its time as Hatsudōki Seizō K.K., the company first produced gas engines, later three-wheeled utility vehicles and passenger cars as well as small delivery vans, before turning its attention to passenger cars.

While most car manufacturers try to establish themselves in as many vehicle classes as possible, Daihatsu has always taken an unusual path. It primarily develops and produces small and very small cars. These vehicles, known as kei cars, are extremely popular, especially in Japan's big cities, due to their space-saving design.

Ahead of its time: Innovations from Daihatsu

Electric cars are becoming more and more important these days, but who would have given them a thought over 50 years ago? Daihatsu developed its first electric vehicle, the prototype P-3, back in 1966 - and a Grand Prix winner at that. And if that wasn't enough, in 2002 it followed up with a self-generating catalytic converter that reduced the amount of precious metals needed in car construction.
